Bad news when it comes to diabetics and exercise: Most people with Type 2 diabetes or at risk for it apparently ignore their doctors' advice to be active.

Fewer than 40 percent get exercise, a new study found, and the more in danger the patients are, the less likely they are to be active.

That's despite an earlier study that found nearly three-quarters of diabetics said their doctors had advised them to exercise. The patients who got the strongest warnings to get moving were the least likely to listen, said research being released yesterday.

"People should exercise more, that story is out," said Dr. Elaine Morrato, who led both studies. "What we're saying is, 'Here's a high-risk population that can benefit from exercise, and they're even less likely to exercise.'"

Without exercise, Type 2 diabetics face complications ranging from nerve damage to high blood pressure.

Create lifetime habits in your 20s

The 20s is the transition decade. You've jumped from high school to college or university or to a full-time job. You're already living on your own or thinking of moving (hopefully soon) out of your parents' basement. And you're making all kinds of life decisions, including those affecting health and fitness.

Beware of picking up bad habits, warns Dr. Jeff Robinson, a family physician with a diploma in sports medicine, and a sports injury consultant at the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic.

"You're sitting more behind a desk than you did when you were in your teens and you're less active than when you were involved in school activities. It's important to start picking up lifelong habits to maintain your fitness because there's often pressure to go the other way," he says.

Want Weight Loss? Then STOP Focusing On Losing Weight

Today I have a message that is a little deep, but could very well get you over the hump of your struggle to lose weight once and for all. Stick around, because this is gonna be a good one!

We all know the secret to lasting weight loss and weight maintenance success is implementing a permanent lifestyle change, right? For most of us, that's low-carb living! But saying it is one thing and doing it is another concept altogether.

Did you know that RIGHT NOW you have all the power and ability within that body of yours to be successful at WHATEVER you want to achieve? You REALLY do! All you have to do is want it so badly that you can taste it and invariably it will happen for you. That was my mindset when I lost 180 pounds in 2004 and it has served me well over these past few years maintaining that weight loss.
